Description
The Renegade Viper Shield Hoof Boot provides durable, lightweight, long-lasting hoof protection for barefoot horses, eliminating the expense of metal shoes and allowing natural flexion of the hoof for optimum circulation and healthy hooves.
Viper Hoof Boots have been developed over 17 years for maximum mileage, hoof stability and endurance hoof boot for barefoot horses. With competition-proven pivoting heel captivator design, a military grade cabling system and durable straps, the Viper Hoof Boot features a sleek look and bright colours, while the ultra-durable polyurethane used to make the Viper Shield results in a seriously tough, long-lasting boot. Deep tread grooves provide longer-lasting grip to bite the ground, and display the artistic talent of Renegade's hoof boot designer, Kirt Lander.
The amount of grip will change if the surface is wet. Always consider safety for horse and rider regarding wet/dry surfaces.
Key Features -
- The material used to make Viper Shield hoof boots is a new, ultra durable polyurethane resulting in a much longer lasting boot.
- You can expect 600-1000 miles out of Viper Shield™ hoof boots.
- Designed by Endurance riders, for Endurance riders when performance in extreme distances and grueling conditions are demanded.
- The design was trimmed down using finite element analysis, resulting in a hoof boot with more robust tread which weighs around 15% less than the Classic, and offers more lateral clearance on both the Boot Shell and the Heel Captivator.
- A deeper Heel Captivator 'gullet' allows for improved pastern bone clearance. The inside of the hoof boot is texturized and the Heel Captivator Liner is bonded in place for more stability in action.
- The movable heel captivator design accommodates and supports the bio-mechanics of the hoof and leg structure, allowing for natural flexion of both the hoof and the pastern.
- A correctly fitted boot stays on over all types of terrain and offers grip and traction on a variety of surfaces.
- Easy to put on and take off.
- Replaceable parts.
- Included is 1 spare tension strap (per single boot) or 2 spare tension straps (per pair of boots) and an allen key for adjusting the cables.
- The Viper™ logo and boot size are stamped large inside of each boot for quick and easy size readability.
- Renegade® hoof boots were invented in and are made in the United States of America.
Sizing Information -
The sizing scheme for the Viper uses the metric system while also conforming to the industry standard length first then width second. So a boot that is 135 mm long and 125 mm wide will be size 135x125.
There are three width choices for every length.
The Renegade Viper sizes come out a little smaller than suggested by the boot dimensions, so please refer to the size chart before sizing. If in doubt, it is generally better to size up (about 5mm longer and 10mm wider than the given hoof after a proper Natural Style Trim).
You can view the Viper size chart here.
PLEASE NOTE: Renegade Vipers are specifically designed for naturally trimmed barefoot hooves, with low heels, a short toe and a mustang roll. They will not fit horses with much longer than wide hooves. Horses with high heels, long toes or flared walls may have problems with boot retention and there may be increased wear and tear on the tread and cables.
If you have previously used Renegade Classic boots, then you will find the shape of the Viper shell is different. The heel area and the top third of the boot have both been pulled inwards, to create a closer fit and to prevent dirt and debris entering the boot. This means that given a proper boot size, the boot is a more snug fit than the Renegade Classic. Increased stability when sized properly is also a benefit of the new upper shape. The Viper shell may not suit all hoof shapes, and in some cases the Renegade Classic shape may be more suitable.
Fitting and use -
While not a difficult boot to use, it’s generally not ready to go straight out of the box. In most cases some slight adjustment of the straps and cables will be required to obtain the ultimate fit, and we are happy to talk you through this process if necessary (99% of boot performance issues can be resolved by adjustment or modification of the boot).
Included with your boot(s) is 1 spare tension strap (per single boot) or 2 spare tension straps (per pair of boots) and an allen key for adjusting the cables.
A ‘Pro-Wrench’ tool is also available from us – this tool makes the job of changing/adjusting a cable much easier. We stock all Renegade Classic and Renegade Viper parts, to ensure you can prolong the working life of your boots. You can find them all HERE.
Please get in touch with sales@hoofbootique for advice on adjusting and fitting your boots.
We also have a Renegade Viper Fit Kit Hire or Mxied Fit Kit Hire available to help with fitting, if you are unsure which size boot will be best for your horse.
Traction Studs -
These can be added on to the boots to provide extra grip and traction on snow, ice, slippery grass and leaves, and other similar surfaces. While they can be used on pavement and dirt, these types of surfaces will wear down the stud inserts much faster. Please note that the studs are not meant to be easily removable and adding these to boots makes them non-returnable.
Renegade Bonded Insole Gel-Pads -
Renegade boots can bit fitted with Bonded Insole Gel-Pads upon request. This is a factory installed, non-removable Insole Gel Pad which is not usually necessary under normal circumstances. It will add about 60 grams or 2 ounces to the weight of the boot. It is intended for foundered or laminitic horses to help improve movement and thus circulation to promote healing.
If you wish to order Renegade boots with the Insole Gel Pads, you will need to go to our Parts and Accessories page and purchase the Pads separately (2 pads required per boot pair).
Please Click Here to purchase the Gel Pads.
Please note, boots fitted with Bonded Insole Gel-Pads will take 3-4 weeks to arrive with us once ordered as they are imported from the USA.
Furthermore, as adding Gel Pads is considered a customisation, they are non-returnable.
Cut-backs -
If you find the Vipers are too long for your horse and you require the length to be trimmed, or cut-back, then please note there is an extra charge per boot for this and the boots will then be non-returnable. It is therefore important to be sure of the boot suitability and sizing before arranging a cut-back!
This custom option will remove excess length from the back of the boot (usually 5 - 10mm). This is a good option for horses that overreach and interfere, as the best way to mitigate interference is to have the boots fit as flush to the heel as possible.
Some horses may also have wide, round hooves, necessitating a larger boot size to accommodate the width, but leaving excess boot hanging out past the back of the hoof. This would be a good scenario to use the cutback option.
When sizing for Vipers, you may need to allow approximately 5mm of clearance
between the hoof measurement and the boot measurement, sometimes up to 10mm.
